The Motorists Insurance Group, Chairman, Former CEO
John is Chairman of the Board of The Motorists Insurance Group, which is an affiliated group of twelve property, casualty and life insurance entities doing business in 17 states with more than 4,000 independent insurance agents.
He joined Motorists in 1972 and progressed through a series of field marketing and home office management positions. In 1995 he joined the Group’s senior executive team and was named President and Chief Operating Officer in 2000, and was elected CEO and Chairman of the Board in 2001.
During John’s tenure as CEO, The Motorists Insurance Group more than doubled in size and now ranks among the top 25 mutual property and casualty insurance organizations in the U.S.
John has been actively involved in numerous civic and industry organizations. During his career he has served as Chairman or President of the Ohio Insurance Institute, the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, the Ohio Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, and the Association of Ohio Life Insurance Companies, and on the board of the Ohio Law Enforcement Foundation and the Central Ohio United Way. In 2013-2014 he served as Chairman of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC).
During his career John has been honored to receive numerous awards, including: “Industry Person of the Year” from the Professional Insurance Agents of Ohio, the “Ohio Businessperson of the Year” by The Ohio State University professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, and “The Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation. Also, in 2014 he was admitted to the “Hall of Excellence” of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges.
In 2014, Ohio Governor Kasich appointed John to the JobsOhio Board, which is the Governor’s primary job growth and business development initiative. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Exeter Trust Company and CyberScout.
John is a graduate of Ohio Northern University where he is Chairman Emeritus of the University’s Board of Trustees. He holds both the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), and the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) professional insurance designations.
He and his wife, Shirley, who were high school sweethearts, reside in Marco Island, Florida. They are the proud parents of two adult sons, daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren.
